Camera Setup
Why We Chose the OM System Tough TG-7 for Underwater Macro Photography
People are often surprised when they learn that many of our favourite underwater macro photographs were taken with a compact camera rather than a large mirrorless or DSLR system.
After years of diving, travelling and experimenting with different equipment, we chose the OM System Tough TG-7 because it gives us the right balance of image quality, portability, simplicity and macro capability.
Why We Did Not Choose a Large Mirrorless System
Modern mirrorless systems can produce outstanding underwater images, but they also bring cost, weight and complexity. For the type of travel diving we do, that matters.
- Larger housings and ports
- More luggage weight
- Higher replacement cost
- More accessories to maintain
- More complicated setup on small dive boats
There is nothing wrong with larger systems. For some photographers they are the right choice. For our MacroDivers work, the TG-7 gives us a more practical and enjoyable setup.
The TG-7's Secret Weapon: Close Focus
The reason the TG-7 is so strong underwater is simple: it can focus extremely close. That makes it ideal for the small subjects we love photographing.
- Nudibranch rhinophores
- Shrimp eyes
- Tiny crabs
- Juvenile fish
- Frogfish texture
- Small reef details
Microscope Mode Makes Macro Accessible
Microscope Mode is one of the main reasons the TG series became so popular with underwater photographers. It allows new users to get close, fill the frame and start seeing details that are easily missed during a normal dive.
It is especially useful for very small subjects, although for general macro with a strobe we also like A Mode because it gives more control over aperture and depth of field.
Built for Travel Diving
Our diving takes us to places such as Ambon, Anilao, Raja Ampat, Mozambique and Lembeh Strait. A small camera system is easier to pack, easier to carry and easier to handle when boats are busy or luggage allowance is limited.
The TG-7 also lets us enjoy the dive. We are not carrying a huge rig on every entry, and we can still come back with strong macro images.
It Grows With You
The TG-7 works well as a simple camera, but it also gives you a sensible upgrade path. You can start with the camera and housing, then add lighting as your skills develop.
- Start with the camera and housing
- Add a good dive light or video light
- Add the Backscatter Mini Flash 2
- Add a snoot for creative macro
- Consider wet macro lenses when you need more magnification
TG-7 vs Larger Camera Systems
| Feature | TG-7 | Large Mirrorless System |
|---|---|---|
| Travel weight | Excellent | Heavy |
| Cost | Lower | High |
| Ease of use | Excellent | More complex |
| Macro capability | Excellent | Excellent |
| Boat handling | Easy | More awkward |
| Upgrade path | Good | Excellent but expensive |
Who Should Buy a TG-7?
The TG-7 is particularly well suited to divers who want strong macro capability without committing to a large camera system.
- New underwater photographers
- Travelling divers
- Nudibranch and critter enthusiasts
- Divers who want a lightweight backup camera
- Photographers who value simplicity underwater
Final Thoughts
The OM System Tough TG-7 proves that underwater macro photography does not have to mean huge housings, heavy luggage and a complicated setup. For MacroDivers, it is one of the smartest ways to photograph the small wonders of the underwater world.
